Simply select and order swing gate operators
Sommer & Marantec compared: single- or double-leaf, in-ground, articulated arm, or linear. With measurement check, quick selection, and accessory tips – so you can place your order in minutes.
Quick selection: directly to the matching set
Tip: Start with the number of leaves (single- or double-leaf) and the leaf length/weight. Then determine the installation type (underfloor, articulated arm, linear).

Types of swing gate openers – which one suits my driveway?
Linear (spindle)
Robust, universal, and easy to install. Ideal for most driveways—e.g., Sommer twist 350 or Marantec Comfort 515/516/525.
Articulated arm
The best choice for wide posts or large hinge clearances from the gate edge. Example: Sommer twist AM (Master/Set).
underground
Invisibly installed in the floor, maximum aesthetics and angle. Examples: Sommer twist UG or Marantec underground opener.
Measurement check & measurement (A/B/C dimensions)
To ensure the drive runs smoothly, a few measurements are crucial. Measure for each blade:
| measure | How to measure | What is important |
|---|---|---|
| Clear width | Passage width between the posts. | Drive path & opening angle per wing. |
| Wing length / height | Hinge to wing tip / bottom edge to top edge. | Model approval & wind load. |
| Weight per wing | Estimate/use manufacturer's specifications. | Torque selection. |
| A-measure | Hinge axis → outer edge of post (towards installation side). | Whether an articulated arm is necessary (large A dimension). |
| B-measure | Hinge axis → inside of wing. | Position of the consoles/stroke path. |
| Post thickness | Width/material (steel, stone, wood). | Fastening & spacer plates. |
Use and attach a measurement sheet – we’ll check for free.
Installation requirements & opening angle
End stops are mandatory
Every swing gate needs mechanical stops: closed (center/bottom) and open (each leaf). Without stops, the operator will be damaged.
Opening direction & space
Inward opening is standard. Outward opening should only be considered if the sidewalk/public area remains clear. For underfloor installation, 360° hinge bearings and drainage must be considered.
Electrics & Security
230 V supply cable to the control unit, cables to the light barrier/flashing light. Provide closing edge safety devices at hazardous points. Professional installation recommended.
Accessories & Safety – what makes sense
Operation
- Handheld transmitter , code keypad, key switch
- App/Smart Home via compatible receivers/modules
Security
- Light barriers (mandatory for automatic closing)
- Flashing light, 8k2 contact strips depending on the situation
Controls (summer)
Everything for swing gates
Practical example & ordering process
Example: Entrance 2-wing, 2.8 m each, steel filling
Moderate weight, medium A dimension. Recommended linear set with 24 V, light barrier + flashing light. Set two mechanical end stops.
Matching sets: Sommer twist 350 set or Marantec Comfort 525 set .
How to order in 3 steps

- Go through the measurement check and attach the measurement sheet.
- Add accessories to your shopping cart (light barrier, handheld transmitter).
FAQ
Which drive type for wide posts?
Articulated arms (e.g. twist AM) bridge large A dimensions better than linear drives.
Underfloor – when is it worthwhile?
When you want top-notch optics or a 110°+ aperture angle is required, it requires more installation effort, but it's invisible.
24 V or 230 V?
24 V provides smooth operation, precise force control, and emergency operation options. 230 V is mostly used for industrial/heavy-duty applications.
Do I need end stops?
Yes. Closed and open. They protect gears and maintain positions with repeatable precision.
Is external opening possible?
Technically, yes, but only if public land remains clear. Safety and regulations must be observed.
