Handheld transmitters & radio receivers: retrofitting compatible options – here's how

Lost your remote control? New gate – same old remote? No stress. Here you'll find the quick route to compatible remote controls, universal receivers, keypads and app control.

What it's really about

Radio communication usually fails not because of the gate itself, but because of the combination of brand, frequency, and rolling code. Solution: Either stick with the original system (e.g., Marantec bi·linked or SOMMER SOMloq2) – or retrofit a universal 868 MHz receiver and connect modern remote controls or a keypad. Result: Range, security, convenience – without replacing the gate operator.

Advantages & Benefits

Ready to go again immediately

New handheld transmitter, compatible receiver – done.

Safe & stable

Modern 868 MHz radio technology with rolling code.

More comfort

Easily add code keypad, app control and partial opening.

Technical background

Systems

Marantec uses bi·linked (868 MHz), SOMMER SOMloq2 (868.95 MHz). Both are secure and brand-specific – cross-brand compatibility is possible via a universal receiver.

Frequencies

Today, 868 MHz is dominant. 433 MHz is widespread, but older systems are often more susceptible to interference. Receiver/transmitter matching is important.

Rolling code

Changing codes increase security. Old "fixed-code copiers" are not a solution – upgrade professionally is recommended.

Selection & Decision

The solution in 60 seconds
  1. Identifying the brand (drive/receiver): Marantec or SOMMER?
  2. Option A : Stay in the system → Select original remote control.
  3. Option B : Mix brands → Retrofit a universal receiver (868 MHz).
  4. Convenience : Order code keypad and app module directly at the same time.
Quick access

Tip: Our guide compares receivers and systems – saves time during the matching process.

Training & Assembly

Original system
  • Marantec/SOMMER: Program the hand-held transmitter to the receiver/drive.
  • Short learning mode, then assign the key – done.
Universal receiver
  • Connect 12–24 V AC/DC, relay to control “Impulse”.
  • Pair the remote control with the receiver and test the function.
Security

For outdoor installation: weatherproof housing, strain relief, clean cable routing. Always check the function of the light barrier/closing edge.

Practice, Acknowledgements & News

Practice – Bingen:

The old drive unit and the new remote control were incompatible. A universal 868 MHz receiver was used → better range, everything from one source.

Thank you for your type plate photos and short mobile phone videos – this allows us to provide you with the right radio combination without further questions.

New in the shop: Smart home packages & code keypad overview – filter faster, order faster.

Maintenance & Care

  • Replace the battery (usually CR2032) in good time.
  • Weak range? Check antenna for obstructions.
  • For app modules: Keep firmware/user management up to date.

FAQ

Will every remote control fit every drive?

No. Either keep it original in the system – or make it compatible via a universal receiver.

433 MHz or 868 MHz – which is better?

Today, 868 MHz is most commonly used for stability reasons. The crucial factor remains the appropriate receiver.

What is bi·linked or SOMloq2?

Brand-specific 868 radio protocols from Marantec or SOMMER – secure, but not compatible with each other.

How do I program the remote control?

Receiver/drive in learning mode, select button, save. Then test run.

I have multiple goals – is that possible with one transmitter?

Yes. Use a handheld transmitter with 2-4 channels and program all receivers.

Can I open it with a PIN or app?

Yes. Keypad for PIN access, smart home modules for app/automation.

Do I lose security with universal receivers?

No, if you use modern 868 receivers with rolling code and mount them correctly.

The range is poor – what to do?

Optimize the antenna, replace the battery, check for sources of interference (metal, WLAN router).

Make it compatible today – use it with ease tomorrow
